Wisdom from the Pandemic: A Meditation Retreat with Julian of Norwich

Today we are living in post-pandemic times. The last three years have brought great changes in the ways we live and interact with each other. We have realized the great vulnerability of our global human community and of God’s creation.

In this retreat we will be inspired by the wisdom of Julian of Norwich, the English mystic and anchoress who lived during the time of the Black Death in the 14th century, the pandemic that killed over half of the population of Europe. We were asked to live in lockdown for weeks. Mother Julian lived alone in her cell for well over 30 years, during a terrifying time of plague, war, a divided papacy, a peasants’ revolt, the burning of heretics. Yet her book, ‘Revelations of Divine Love' overflows with love, trust, delight, joy. She has much to teach us today. She calls us to 'love and delight' in God who 'loves and delights in us', and 'to fully trust in him', and 'all shall be well'.

This retreat offers a chance to be inspired by the wisdom of this humble woman of whom Thomas Merton wrote: 'Julian is without doubt one of the most wonderful of all Christian voices. She gets greater and greater in my eyes as I grow older.'
