Life to the full: palliative care in L'Arche and beyond

This live Seminar looks at the question as to how as a society we can look at death and bereavement and see that it relates to how we see life.

What ACTUALLY happens… in the room where someone dies? How do we accompany people just before and just after they die? How do we honour them and remember them, and how do we help each other at these difficult times?

Irene will share with you the stories of Carol and Michelle, who died within days of each other. Carol died in hospital (rather unexpectedly). Michelle had moved to a local nursing home but was still very much part of the community. We will think together about what happened, who was told about their deaths (and how), and in what ways people were able (or not able) to be part of these huge life events.

Michael will then look at: What is palliative care and how is it helpful for someone living with a serious illness and their family? Could lessons learned in caring for the seriously ill be relevant to a world experiencing turmoil, suffering, and uncertainty? In his talk he will present the concept of “deep security,” which he sees as the most important teaching he received from his patient teachers in his 43 years at their bedsides. He will lead participants in a short practice to cultivate deep security, and discuss ways of fostering this in those we accompany and care for.
